Our Approach

Apollo Outreach helps bring Oberlin College and community together through collaborative media-making and mentorship.

Apollo Outreach could not exist without the support and partnership of the Cinema Studies Program and its student mentors. By integrating community outreach directly into the Cinema Studies curriculum, the initiative makes full use of Oberlin College students' creative power — building a bridge between campus and the wider Lorain County community.

Students Teaching Students

At the heart of Apollo Outreach is a students-teaching-students model. Oberlin College students enrolled in the Cinema Studies Program bring their filmmaking and media-production skills into classrooms across Lorain County, working alongside middle- and high-school students on hands-on projects. This peer-to-peer dynamic strengthens skills on both sides — college mentors deepen their own craft while younger students gain confidence, creative voice, and technical know-how.

Mentors guide participants through every stage of production: brainstorming ideas, storyboarding, shooting, editing, and finally sharing completed work with an audience. The result is not just a finished film but a collaborative experience rooted in trust, curiosity, and shared discovery.

The students-teaching-students model at the heart of Apollo Outreach creates a distinctive learning environment where college mentors and younger community members grow together. Through collaborative media-making, printmaking, and film production, participants develop confidence, literacy, and communication skills that extend far beyond the workshop setting. The approach emphasizes hands-on experience, allowing students to observe, interpret, and shape the stories of their own neighborhoods and lives. By integrating community outreach directly into the Cinema Studies curriculum, the initiative makes full use of Oberlin College students' creative power, building a genuine bridge between campus and the wider Lorain County community.

Apollo Outreach believes that young people from all backgrounds have the capacity to become artists, citizens, and leaders when given the right tools and encouragement. The initiative's workshops are developed and staffed by dedicated students and faculty who understand that creative expression is a force for both local and global understanding. Whether through short films, animation, or collaborative printmaking, participants learn multiple forms of production while gaining perspective on the city around them. This reimagining of youth engagement helps shape confident, expressive individuals who carry their creative abilities into whatever paths they choose to pursue.

The initiative's evolving presence in Oberlin, Cleveland, and across Lorain County reflects a long-term commitment to partnership and community support. Volunteers, gardening projects, food recovery efforts, and industry connections all contribute to a holistic approach that goes beyond the classroom. Apollo Outreach facilitates experiences that help young people understand where their food comes from, how neighborhoods change, and what it means to tell a story in motion. As the program continues to grow, it remains grounded in the belief that collaborative creativity can transform individuals and communities alike, one workshop, one film, and one shared meal at a time.

How It Works

Cinema Studies Partnership

Apollo Outreach is built on a deep partnership with Oberlin's Cinema Studies Program, developed in 2002. The program combines critical study, filmmaking, and community service — sending student mentors into schools to teach media as a modern art form.

CINE 294: The AOI Workshop

Oberlin students interested in mentoring can enroll in CINE 294, offered every Fall and Spring semester. No prerequisites are required — just a willingness to learn, collaborate, and share media skills with young people across Lorain County.

Classroom Residencies

Apollo Outreach transports its media production studio to schools around Lorain County for media literacy and production-based residencies. Teachers can schedule residencies upon request, bringing filmmaking directly into their classrooms.

Community Screenings & Events

Student work reaches the public through free events and screenings at the Apollo Theatre and the Oberlin Public Library, celebrating young artists and connecting families with the creative process.
