Summer Media Workshop

Apollo Outreach's flagship program is the two-week Summer Media Workshop, where middle- and high-school students learn filmmaking techniques — from green screen and stop-motion animation to sound design — and screen their completed short films at the Apollo Theatre.

Ways to Participate

Apollo Outreach offers several paths for involvement, whether you're an Oberlin College student, a K–12 educator, or a community member:

  • Oberlin College students can enroll in CINE 294, The AOI Workshop, offered each Fall and Spring semester — no prerequisites required — and mentor young people through hands-on media projects.
  • Teachers and schools across Lorain County can request classroom residencies where Apollo Outreach brings its mobile media production studio directly to students for literacy and production-based workshops.
  • Community members are invited to attend free public events and screenings hosted at the Oberlin Public Library and the Apollo Theatre.

Apollo Outreach believes that meaningful change begins when young people are given the tools and encouragement to tell their own stories. Through workshops in media, printmaking, cinema, and collaborative film production, students from diverse backgrounds across Lorain County build confidence, literacy, and leadership abilities that extend far beyond the classroom. The organization's approach pairs experienced staff and faculty with dedicated volunteers, creating a supportive environment where creativity can flourish. By reimagining how youth observe, interpret, and shape their neighborhoods, Apollo Outreach helps grow not just artists and filmmakers, but engaged citizens and community leaders prepared to make a lasting local and global impact.
